Job Summary
LFCU is looking for an enthusiastic, positive, and friendly person to be a Fraud Investigation & Prevention Analyst at our Administration Center. Under the general supervision of the Compliance Manager, the Fraud Investigation & Prevention Analyst is responsible for investigating suspected fraud, identifying and documenting fraudulent or suspicious activity, supporting fraud-prevention and loss-mitigation efforts, and assisting with related Compliance Department responsibilities.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Maintain the Credit Union’s fraud-prevention process, including daily review of VERAFIN alerts; investigate suspicious or suspected fraudulent activity and create cases as needed.
- Complete case investigations and maintain accurate, chronological case documentation.
- Report suspicious activity to Compliance and assist with the preparation of reports as needed.
- Provide general support for the administrative work of the Compliance Department.
- Serve as a fraud-mitigation resource for Credit Union branches, departments, and management.
- Assist in maintaining a listing of high-risk accounts, performing periodic reviews of high-risk account activity, and documenting and escalating investigations in preparation for SAR consideration where suspicious activity is noted.
- Develop, or assist in developing, training programs that address fraud mitigation for both employees (in relation to their responsibilities) and members (identifying fraud and safeguarding their accounts).
- Serve as a subject-matter resource for the Credit Union on fraud-related and loss-prevention issues; disseminate information, answer questions, and work directly with management to address fraud-mitigation issues as they arise.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in criminal justice, finance, business, accounting, or a related field preferred, or minimum of three (3) years of experience in financial institution fraud prevention, fraud investigation, loss prevention, or a closely related area.
- Experience investigating suspected fraud involving deposit accounts, checks, debit/credit cards, ACH transactions, wires, online banking, account takeover, identity theft, scams, or similar financial crimes.
- Experience creating and maintaining investigative cases, including clear, accurate, chronological case notes, and supporting documentation.
- Experience with fraud-monitoring or case-management software; VERAFIN experience is strongly preferred but not required.
- Credit union or banking experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of financial institution fraud risks, including identity-theft red flags, elder financial exploitation, scams, account takeover, check fraud, and electronic-payment fraud.
- Familiarity with BSA/AML concepts, regulatory compliance issues, and suspicious-activity-reporting requirements sufficient to support the Compliance/BSA function. Direct responsibility for SAR decision-making or filing is not required.
- Ability to review account activity, recognize unusual patterns, gather relevant information, and develop a well-documented fraud investigation.
- Ability to identify activity that may warrant further review and refer completed investigations to Compliance/BSA for SAR consideration.
- Strong investigative and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to recognize patterns and inconsistencies.
- Strong written documentation skills, with the ability to clearly explain investigative findings.
